A Foundation That’s Like An Instagram Filter – But For Your Real Life Face!

“I feel beautiful without makeup on, but when I do put makeup on, it just gives me this extra pop.”

– Cardi B

I haven’t written about makeup in literally years.

I hadn’t worn makeup for a least a year, while my enhanced COVID19 risk was keeping me safely confined to my house.

But I did my full face a couple of week ago – and came to the regrettable conclusion that my poor, neglected MAC Studio Fix was so far past its best that I needed to throw it away.

Or at least I threw the contents away. I’m holding on to the container. In the potentially vain hope that my city will get a new MAC concession somewhere now Debenhams is closing, and I’ll still be able to take advantage of the Back to MAC scheme.

And then, in the market for a new foundation, I decided to find out what all the fuss was about Charlotte Tilbury.

So I tried the Airbrush Flawless in Shade 1 Neutral. Not quite as good a colour match as the one it replaced but good enough that I was happy with it.

And OH MY GOD when I put it on and looked in the mirror did I see what the fuss was all about.

It was looking at a picture of myself with an Instagram filter on – only it was there in real life.

The only editing I’ve done to this picture is to crop it smaller and tweak up the brightness.

My skin has greatly improved since the beginning of the year when I started concentrating on getting into a proper skincare routine.

I even briefly thought I’d cured myself of eczema entirely – until I sat outside in the cold for a couple of hours. And realised that actually it just hadn’t flared up in response to the winter weather and pollution like it normally does, since I haven’t been anywhere this entire winter.

But it remains far from ‘flawless’. And it definitely isn’t glowy.

For contrast – here is my face in the MAC foundation

The Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation also didn’t dry out on my face the way a lot of others have, even when mixed with a moisturiser. In fact I think the silicones that contribute to that filtered, flawless look it creates helped to seal moisture into my skin.

The marketing bumf says that this product will keep your skin moisturised for up to 24 hours. I’m too old to have any reason to go that long without washing my face anymore – but I can say that my dry, incredibly sensitive skin didn’t show even a hint of reactivity after a full day and evening of wearing it.

Suffice it to say I was incredibly impressed. So impressed that it moved me to write about it.

I will definitely be trying out more of the Charlotte Tilbury range.

I'd love to hear what you think...
