5 Ingredient Pasta – 20SB Cooking Contest

“Always start out with a larger pot than what you think you need.” ~ Julia Child

So, over on 20 Something Bloggers JerseySjov suggested starting up a cooking competition. I was quite excited by the idea since at the moment I’m pretty much living in our kitchen anyway.

I was really disappointed when I wasn’t up to cooking a creative quesadilla in time to take part in the first round but I thought the latest, which calls for a five ingredient past recipe, was the perfect opportunity to break out one of my best recipes.

Unfortunately the flu put paid to that idea. The pasta is the only ingredient to that recipe that I have in the house and there’s no way I’m going out in the cold to get the rest of them, so I’m just going to have to work with what I’ve got.

And so I have made for you a sausage and tomato farfalle.

This recipe is actually great for when you’re feeling poorly. Or tired, or fed-up, or just too stressed out to be in the mood for ‘proper’ cooking. It’s warm, and filling, and comforting, and easy. And quick; you can throw this together in twenty minutes – half an hour at the absolute most.

I adapted this recipe from one I tore out of a magazine and have long since lost. That insisted the meal called for left-over cooked sausages; but since I can’t envisage a scenario in which anyone would ever have any left over cooked sausages I’m going to assume that you’ll be starting your cooking from scratch.

In theory this serves two people.

Ingredients:

  • a chain of your favourite kind of sausages – meat/veggie, cheap/gourmet, doesn’t matter
  • a tin of chopped tomatoes
  • a clove of garlic
  • three tablespoons full of thyme
  • farfalle pasta – or whatever other kind of pasta you prefer/have in the kitchen at the time

Method:

Step 1. Chop the raw sausages into bite sized pieces and stick them under the grill for fifteen minutes.

Step 2. Pour the chopped tomatoes into a pan.

Step 3. Crush the garlic and stir it into the tomatoes along with the thyme.

Step 4. In a separate pan put the pasta on to start cooking in boiling water with a pinch of salt.

Step 5. Remove the sausages from under the grill and add them to the pan with the tomatoes, garlic, and thyme. Stir the ingredients together and heat thoroughly.

Step 6. Once the pasta is cooked to your liking drain it and serve along with the sausages and sauce.

Et Voilà!

  1. That looks pretty good. I think that pasta would be best with a summer sausage, however I realize that’s just my personal preference.

    1. That does sound good. I have truly terrible taste in sausages. The supermarket I go to used to do a packet of forty sausages for sixteen pence. I thought they were the best sausages ever. They don’t sell them anymore because they were told to stop making them because they weren’t really fit to be eaten.

  2. sometimes the best meals are the ones made with stuff that’s already in your house… it makes sense; you must like if if you have a stockpile!
