30 Before 30

I found the list I wrote when I was twenty-four of things I wanted to have done by the time I was thirty.

I have just over a year left; and there are still eleven items left to tick off.  Might have to make it thirty things to do before I’m thirty-five… Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it though.

  1. Learn Mandarin Chinese and become fluent in another language
  2. Learn to play poker
  3. Learn to play the guitar
  4. Go on the London Eye
  5. Go to Morocco
  6. Travel around Africa
  7. Have a dog called Bailey and a cat called Tsingtao
  8. Learn how to make soup
  9. Go back to the Fiera Nordestina in Rio de Janeiro
  10. See if the air in America really does look different  (It does, I swear it does)
  11. Visit my friend who lives in China
  12. Visit the Pyramids
  13. See Madame Butterfly the opera live
  14. Spend an afternoon in a cafe in a piazza in Rome
  15. Make a smoothie
  16. Pass my driving test
  17. Buy a flat
  18. Establish a career and keep the same job for at least two years
  19. Have sex in a public place
  20. Have somewhere to hang all my paintings (I think this is now impossible)
  21. Get my law degree
  22. Drive a racing car
  23. Live abroad
  24. Work in an orphanage
  25. Adopt a child
  26. Live by the sea
  27. Have something published
  28. Overcome my fears of heights and spiders
  29. Get an MA or equivalent
  30. Build a proper snowman

    1. 5, 7, 9, 12, 16, 17, 22, 23, 25, and 26. And I’m giving myself half a point each for 28 and 29.

Oo, that’s and idea, I could add:

      31. Get serious about writing, do something with it – a bit vague I know, but it’s only something I’ve started to think I want to do in the last few weeks.
      32. Get at least another grade in a martial art.
      33. Open a craft shop and cafe.
      34. Go travelling in South America – I’m planning a sabbatical as my thirtieth birthday present to myself.
      35. Buy an iMac.

        1. I hadn’t really thought of it that way. I tend to spend far too much time beating myself up about all the things I feel that I should have done but haven’t yet.
If I get it into my head that I want to do something, I just do it. It never occurs to me to think about it, or whether I should do it, or if I can. Might not be the best way, or the most stable – I’ve moved across the country four times on a whim – but it has got me a lot of stuff done. I am quite pleased with that.
